Abstract
The author conducted a series of numismatic studies using a statistical analysis methodology of the average main engraving characteristics for coins belonging to the same numismatic type. Considering that coins are the finished product of an organized industrial structure, known as the Mint; Considering that industrial production of coins from the same period of time and numismatic type, results in appreciable amounts of coinage by the same engraving and minting process; Considering that after their issuance and release into circulation, coins become objects that obey the laws of random statistical distribution over time; Then, its collection will always gives rise to a sample that reproduces the average main engraving characteristics of the original population. If this sample is significant (in quantity), one can conclude that, any coin that does not correspond to the average main characteristics of the sample is probably false (not corresponding to the norm for that time period and numismatic type) or it is not currency (will be a token, an essay or a fantasy). The methodology used by the author has been condensed in the following numismatic axiom on the recognition of forged coins: TRIGUEIROS´S NUMISMATIC AXIOM - “In a random distribution of a significant sample of coins of the same numismatic type, the probability of the occurrence of a genuine item that does not meet the average main characteristics of the sample population is zero.” (Antonio Trigueiros, July 2014).
